Australians are far ahead of the game for recycling and utilizing rainwater. Almost every home in their dry climate is outfitted with a rainwater tank that can be a source of clear, soft, natural water collected from the roof. They say that the tanks can be installed as garden water or triple filtered drinking water systems. Not a novel idea as water catchment has been around for millenia, but a great thing to implement for Americans who take wasteful showers and sprinkle their lawns midday. I don't know any resources for these tanks in the US, but there are many Aussie manufacturers to get inpiration from.
