piet houtenbos: repurposed grenade oil lamp

Piet Houtenbos has given a purpose to surplus war items by creating a slightly frightening yet delicate and positive lamp. The oil lamp, made from surplus US army hand grenades, aside from its disconcerting presence is a quiet statement that brings light from darkness. At the British Museum and Bristol’s City Museum & Art Gallery there were exhibitions for the arts and culture of Africa, sculptors from Mozambique created a 'Throne of Weapons' and other large pieces using old arms like the AK-47. The pieces are a haunting reminder of the destruction and non contructive practice of war.
