willie cole: found object art

More of my impassioned subject of recycled and found art in artist Willie Cole's world. He salvages anything and everything as material and inspiration, in "Harlem Rose" shoe soles abandoned on the sidewalk, for "Speedster" random pieces of a bicycle and hairdryers suspended as a sort of portal to another dimension. Growing up in Newark, N.J., Cole found himself surrounded by urban consumer culture and he offers an urban African-American perspective on American culture with many pieces based on political and social issues.

"The materials change, but the interest stays the same in finding the aesthetic similarities between connecting consumer objects and tribal traditional design," Cole said.
