house from trash: big dig house: massachusetts

This architectural design from firm Single Speed Designwas constructed of steel and concrete from Boston's Big Dig, using 600,000 lbs of scrap materials. The Big Dig House in Lexington MA has 4300 sq. feet and is a spacious modern idea for the possibilities of sustainable and recycled design. The Single Speed Design firm, won the AIA/BSA Housing Design Award for the home in 2003. I think I saw this home featured on some television program, but I could find no YouTube link to that show.

If you are planning to build or remodel your own home--check out your local salvage yard or architectural antiques business for some recyclable material and better green points before you commit to buying more expensive materials with less character.
